Students and Graduates
Overview
Making the change from being a student to an employee can be challenging and daunting at the same time which is why our hospitals offer a transition framework for registered nurses and midwives. Transition is about growing as a person and a professional, adapting to new roles and environments. Our transition framework is designed to enable partnerships between the ‘new’ staff member and South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health Service (SESIH), in which responsibility for development is shared.
In health, change is a constant companion, be it changing roles, team members, environments or patient care needs.
SESIH transition framework is intended to enable every registered nurse and midwife the opportunity to feel safe as they adapt to change.
Choosing SESIH Nursing and Midwifery service to launch your career as a registered nurse or midwife is a wise idea. You will notice that each of our hospitals offer new staff an experience that looks a little different, however they all incorporate the following core principles:
| Person Centred Work Culture
A person centred work culture is one which focuses on people rather than processes. |
It is a nurturing environment which equally values personal growth and professional development. It is an approach where team work and inclusiveness promote effective patient care. |
| Framework
A framework is a flexible structure which recognises that different people need different types and levels of support. |
The transition framework is tailored to meet the needs of the partnership (the employee & the organisation), and allows for flexible approaches to career development. |
| Learning & Development A nursing and midwifery career, is a commitment to life long learning. |
Each hospital offers a supportive learning environment that enables the development of both professional and clinical skills through offering a variety of learning opportunities. |
| Support Support can be an approach or a process depending on the needs of the employer or employee |
The transition framework allows for meaningful, regular feedback enabling the achievement of shared goals. |
| Leadership Is central to the provision of effective care, SESIH recognises that leadership is important at all levels of care |
Effective Leadership is valued across SESIH. Leadership is provided by Nursing & Midwifery managers along with a range of other staff who will assist you in your Leadership Development. |
| Orientation A formal introduction that commences from Day 1 which is aimed at making the initial transition easy |
The organisation has a responsibility to ensure all new staff are familiarised to the organisation, their work environment, work unit and their role. |
| Induction A dynamic process that accommodates the individuals ongoing learning needs, and matches them with the goals and values of the organisation and the needs of the patients |
The transition framework is designed to ensure that new staff are socialised into the workplace culture, are provided access to the information, training and education required to fulfil their work role, and are welcomed to the work team |
